Now that the temperatures have dropped and colder days lie ahead, it’s all about cozying up our interiors. It’s a great way to inject some joy and comfort into the winter season, the kind that lasts well beyond the holidays. Here are our five favourite tricks for creating a cozier home this winter, without ever having to turn up the heat.
Add Texture
Time to embrace it all: the chunky knit blankets, the faux fur rugs, anything plush or sheepskin. Whatever texture speaks to you when it’s cold outside, make sure you have it in abundance indoors. Swap out your linen throw-pillow covers for cable-knit or velvet, keep a basket of sherpa-lined slippers and thick socks by the front door, and fill those rungs on your blanket ladder with enough lap blankets for a crowd. The mere sight of these items will warm you up.
Layer Accessories
More is more, especially during a Canadian winter. Don’t just stop with a single blanket, layer on several, each of a different texture and weight. The same goes for throw pillows and even rugs; layering a smaller rug on top of a larger one has been a go-to look in decor for several seasons now and it’s absolutely perfect during the colder months. Layering is also a great way to shake up your decor without having to start from scratch—you’re simply adding on, and by doing so, you’re changing the whole feel of the room.
Create A Cozy Winter Reading Nook
Who says reading nooks are exclusively for warm sunny days or rainy afternoons? Nothing could be better than curling up with a good book or a stack of newspapers or magazines surrounded by plush cushions, warm blankets, a soft rug underfoot, and some welcoming hygge decor. Take your reading experience to the next level by creating a little wintery oasis, where you can tuck in and lose yourself for hours at a time.
Add Soft Lighting
The addition of soft lighting is one of the easiest and most inexpensive ways to mark the transition between seasons. When it gets dark out early, turn up the glow inside by hanging string lights, setting out some battery-operated candles, and displaying a few of your favourite light-up holiday decorations. Another good strategy is to invest in—or simply move around—a couple of floor lamps; put these in any dark corners you may have to help warm up your space. Lightly re-arranging a couple of furniture pieces helps too. It changes up the energy and allows you to use and enjoy your space in a slightly different way.
Use Greenery
Believe it or not, bringing some of the outdoors in can help cozy up your home too, even in the depths of winter. You can use sprigs of greenery, evergreen branches, real or faux wreaths, potted plants—whatever works with your decor and catches your eye. The greenery provides a nice contrast to all of the soft furnishings you’ve added in for the winter and brings additional texture into the space.
