Moving into your first apartment is a major, exciting milestone in life. When you’re getting ready for your move, you’ll soon realize that there are a lot of things you’ll need to buy to make daily life easy. While you certainly don’t need to have every single comfort (or to spend a fortune) when you’re just starting out, there are definitely some necessities you won’t want to do without. Here are the 4 essential things to buy for your first apartment.
A Mattress And Some Bedding
You’ll want and need a comfortable place to sleep. Even if you’re not ready to invest in a full bed frame and headboard right away, make sure to find a good quality mattress so you can get a good night’s sleep. Don’t skimp out on bedding either. Find a decent set of bed linens—ideally two, so you can use one and have a clean set ready for laundry days—and a comforter or duvet. Good quality pillows will also help you rest well. If you’d rather not buy a mattress and would prefer a multitasking piece of furniture, consider a futon, which can function as a couch and daybed too. If budget is an issue, a good air mattress is perfectly fine.
Kitchen Essentials
There’s no getting around needing the basics here—you need to eat! You will need at least a couple of pots and pans (full sets aren’t necessary), one oven-safe dish, a baking sheet, at least two plates and bowls, a couple of pieces of flatware, three or four glasses, a mug for tea or coffee, an inexpensive coffee maker, a couple of knives, and basic cooking utensils such as a spatula or large spoon. You’ll also want a cutting board, a set of oven mitts, a measuring cup and spoons, a few dish towels, and a garbage can.
Bathroom Basics
This is another area you’ll need to shop for and thankfully most of these must-haves are inexpensive. Plan to buy a set of towels and a wall hook, a shower curtain and liner, a bathmat, a toilet cleaning brush, a plunger, and a trash can. Don’t forget the soap and toilet paper! Of course, you’ll need all of your regular toiletries too.
Other Household Necessities
These might not be the most glamorous items, but you’ll definitely be glad to have them. On the list of things to buy for your first apartment, be sure to include a first-aid kit and a few basic tools, such as a screwdriver and hammer. Stock up on cleaning supplies too, including a broom and dustpan, garbage bags, paper towels, a mop and bucket, a handheld vacuum, laundry detergent, dish soap, sponges and cloths (ideally separate ones for your kitchen and bathroom), rubber gloves, and hand soap.Enjoy stocking up your first apartment! You’ll be so glad to have everything you need close at hand. Thanks for reading and don’t forget to follow the Medallion blog for more tips on furnishing your first place.
