If you’ve recently found yourself needing a work-from-home space, you’re not alone! If you’re accustomed to going into the office each day, it can be an adjustment to stay home, and may even present issues with focussing on your work. One of the best strategies to ensure concentration is to have a good desk setup! Read on for our tips to set up a workspace in your home.
Create A Dedicated Space
Maintaining a work-life balance can be hard when you’re working from home, so we recommend setting up your desk in a dedicated space that’s not an area you typically relax in. Avoid the bedroom if possible, but if you have roommates who are frequently in common spaces this may not be an option. If you do work in your bedroom, create your work-from-home space in the farthest area from your bed. Finally, consider lighting. A study by Carnegie Mellon University found that natural light stimulates productivity.
Add Your Personal Touch
One of the benefits of working from home is you can add your personal flair to your space! Incorporate your favourite colours and keep a beloved throw or blanket nearby to get cozy. Add pictures of your family and friends as well as other mementos. If you love plants, decorate your desk with them as in the picture above. Whatever you choose, make sure your workspace reflects you!
Have All Your Needs At Your Fingertips
It’s a lot easier to get work done when you aren’t constantly getting up to search for something! There’s no need to recreate the exact setup you would have in a traditional office (a less is more approach takes up less room and is easier to keep neat), but ensuring you have a pen to jot down notes and somewhere to store important documents will be a big help. It’s also not necessary to buy lots of new storage solutions, as you may have household objects that could do the trick. Clear off some nearby shelf space to store documents and keep pens in a mason jar or cute mug.
Keep Ergonomics In Mind
It may be tempting to sit on a couch all day, but this isn’t the most ergonomic approach. Avoid back pain by sitting on a supportive surface and keeping these three tips in mind:
- Your forearms should be parallel to the floor when your hands are positioned on your keyboard
- Your computer should be at about eye level
- Your feet should be firmly on the floor when you are in a sitting position
Follow these suggestions and you won’t find yourself with aches and pains at the end of a workday.
These are just a few ideas to help you set up a workspace in your home. By adding in your personal touch and doing the most to keep yourself productive, you’ll find working from home isn’t very different than working in an office.
