When it comes to decorating your rental unit, there are many rules that must be followed at all times. We call them “The 10 Commandments of Decorating your Rental Apartment”. If you follow these guidelines very carefully, you will be a master decorator in no time. Good luck!
1: Thou Shalt Always Buy Versatile Pieces
When you are able to mix and match your accessories, furniture, art and other belongings, you will create an entirely new way for you to decorate. Start by organizing your pieces by colour, fabric and metal, and slowly begin to place them in different rooms and with different items. You’ll be surprised with all that you can do with your existing stuff.
2: Thou Shalt Always Add More Lighting
The main rule of decorating is to never forget about lighting. Changing up your existing lamps, and having fun with new lampshades and coverings, can dramatically open up your place. Be sure to use white light bulbs, and then get creative with placement. It’s always a good idea to put lights near mirrors, as it will shine across your room!
3: Thou Shalt Always Add Greenery
This is a little change that can make a big difference. By placing plants and flowers around your rental apartment, you’re instantly going to notice a difference in the air, mood and ambiance. There’s no limit to how many plants you can have, and what types you can have. Be mindful about proper lighting and placement – but seriously, it’s the best way to spruce up your space!
4: Thou Shalt Always Match Your Curtains
When your curtains match your couch or carpet, you can easily make people think you’re a professional interior decorator. For the spring, we recommend using natural, nude colours over your windows and on your floors. And because it’s extremely difficult to change your couch fabrics, you can incorporate pillows and throw blankets that match your curtains – sheer, lacy fabrics always do the trick!
5: Thou Shalt Always Add Storage
Here’s your chance to get crafty! You know you can never have too much storage. And as for tidying up, now’s the time. We recommend you start with the kitchen, and work your way out from there. Add drawer dividers, over-the-door organizers, coat hangers, and anything else you can use to amplify your space. Remember, storage bins are your best friend!
6: Thou Shalt Never Forget About Your Rugs
Sometimes the places in your apartment that need the most love are hiding in plain sight – like your floors. A new rug, floor runner or welcome mat can seriously turn any apartment from drab to fab in just a couple of minutes. Get creative with patterns and colours!
7: Thou Shalt Always Display art
You can never have too many pieces of art on display. More is always merrier! The good thing about art is, mixing and matching is easy. You can create your very own an art gallery wall by arranging your favourite pieces strategically around your place. We’ve included some of our favourite display patterns above!
8: Thou Shalt Always Mix Fabrics
Fabrics are your friend! Springtime is all about having fun with textiles. Start by collecting all your favourite pillows, throw blankets, and tapestries, and begin to mix and match them in different arrangements. If you have a little bit of extra money, take a trip to your favourite fabric/home store and have some fun adding to your collection!
9: Thou Shalt Always Upcycle Before Buying
This rule goes for any redecoration process – DIY before you buy! During your spring cleaning, put aside any belongings of yours that you can see having a second life. Things like old ladders, cabinet doors, chairs, and even clothing can be made into something totally new. See above for some inspiration!
10: Have Fun and Be Bold
Last, but certainly not least, make this project one that you’re excited about. It’s easy to put decorating off as the weather gets warmer, but springtime is the best time to get your place ready for the summer! All you have to do is make a plan, get some friends involved and get to work – but the most important rule of all is to have fun!
