Making the most of winter in Toronto means getting outside and keeping active. One of the most fun ways to do this is on skates; it’s great exercise, gets the endorphins going, and lets you enjoy the fresh air. Even better, the city has a number of picturesque outdoor venues to explore, so you can switch up the locale and try a new rink on your next outing. Here are our top recommendations for where to go for a winter skate in Toronto.
The Bentway Skating Trail
Ever imagined yourself skating underneath the Gardiner Expressway? The Bentway Skating Trail is a not-to-be-missed experience, thanks to its unique setting. The 220-metre, figure-eight loop is located on the lands of the Fort York National Historic Site. This year, it includes a winter art exhibition entitled Moving with Joy by Invialuk artist Maureen Gruben. The Bentway offers skate and helmet rentals, as well as skate sharpening onsite. On certain days and times, hot beverages are available for purchase.
Nathan Phillips Square
Skating at Nathan Phillips Square is a tradition for many that dates back decades. This classic attraction draws locals and tourists alike, who flock here to enjoy skating on the massive rink alongside the colourful and iconic Toronto sign. Glide under the Freedom Arches (did you know that a piece of the Berlin Wall is embedded in this memorial?), taking in the beauty of all those sparkling lights, and when you’re done, grab something to eat from one of the many great restaurants in the area.
The Natrel Rink At Harbourfront
Another spectacular outdoor setting that you must visit is the Natrel Rink at Harbourfront, Canada’s largest outdoor artificial ice rink. Located at Harbourfront Centre, the rink offers incredible, scenic views of both the Lake Ontario waterfront and the city skyline. Enjoy music while you skate and grab a hot drink or a bite to eat from Lakeside EATS.
Evergreen Brick Works
Right in the heart of the city, the Evergreen Brick Works Skating Rink offers its own picturesque take on the cherished winter pastime. This outdoor skating rink weaves through snow-covered gardens under exposed beams from the roof of the old brick factory. Bring your own skates or you can rent a pair. Please be aware that for this rink you need to register ahead of time for an hour-long slot. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy a nice leisurely skate in a gorgeous, one-of-a-kind setting.
Colonel Samuel Smith Park Skate Trail
The Colonel Samuel Smith Park Skate Trail was the city’s first ice skating trail and is a popular figure-eight loop in a park that runs along a stretch of wooded shoreline. The 250-metre trail is one of the few spots in the city where you can skate surrounded by a natural environment. You’ll glide past the red brick Power House Recreation Centre, a historic power plant with a 100-foot-high chimney stack. The park, in the Kipling and Lakeshore area, is part of the much larger Great Lakes Waterfront Trail system.
It’s time to bundle up and lace up your skates! Explore these rinks and more this winter; skating is a great way to keep active until the arrival of spring. Thanks for reading and don’t forget to follow the Medallion blog for more great winter recreation tips.
